The Sparo Mine — Where Montana History Runs Beneath Your Feet

Some Montana properties are measured in acres. Others are measured in history. The Sparo Mining Claim is one of the latter.

Located within the historic Butte mining district, these 20.65 acres of patented mining ground sit within a landscape that helped make Montana one of the world's great mining regions. The Sparo's story reaches back to the formative years of Butte, when prospectors, engineers, attorneys, investors and mining men were following mineralization through the hills and building fortunes beneath the Montana sky.

Among the names connected to this ground is John Lindsay—a Silver Bow County district judge, attorney, mining-property participant, and an associate of Marcus Daly during Butte's extraordinary transformation. Lindsay arrived in Butte in 1889 as Daly's private secretary and legal counsel before eventually taking the bench.

Lindsay understood mining.

He understood mineral rights.

He understood the value—and uncertainty—of Montana's mineral ground.

And yet, among the many claims and properties that passed through the hands of men of his era, the Sparo remained one he held.

That fact alone invites a question.
